Wilderness EMS (WEMS)

5-day wilderness medicine upgrade for licensed EMS providers. Add austere environment skills to your existing scope — austere airway, extended patient care, and field improvisation.

Wilderness EMS (WEMS)

WEMS is a true skills upgrade — not a repackaged WFR for people with EMS credentials. This 5-day course is designed specifically for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, and other licensed medical professionals who need to operate in environments where your usual resources, protocols, and backup aren't available.

You will add skills that don't exist in street EMS: extended patient care over hours or days, improvised equipment, evacuation medicine, and decision-making when the hospital is a helicopter ride away and the helicopter isn't coming for 6 hours.

What You'll Add to Your Practice

  • Wilderness patient assessment adapted from your existing EMS framework
  • Extended patient care: monitoring, reassessment, and documentation over hours
  • Austere airway management with limited equipment
  • Improvised splinting, packaging, and evacuation
  • Environmental emergencies beyond street EMS scope
  • Wilderness pharmacology and field-expedient interventions
  • Evacuation decision-making and coordination with SAR/air assets

WEMS courses are approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider #CEP17692) for 45 contact hours. EMS CE approved through CAPCE and State of NM EMS Licensing.
